Electric Pontoon Boats: A Quieter, Cleaner Alternative
For certain types of recreational boating, electric pontoon boats simply make more
sense than the larger, fuel-driven options. Sure, you could go with one of those huge, luxury behemoths that
have more horsepower than you’ll ever need. They tend to be much bigger, heavier, and roomier than electric
boats, but what if you’re only going to be using your boat for two or three people? Or what if you’re going
to be boating on a lake that doesn’t allow fuel propelled motors? Electric pontoon boats might be the
alternative that you’re looking for.
One mistaken belief about electric pontoon boats is that the battery life doesn’t give
you enough time to do all of the cruising that you may want to do in a day. But in fact, the cruise range of
a typical electric outboard motor is up to 50 miles, or even more for some models. Even people with
fuel-driven pontoon boats rarely go that distance in a day. The most you’ll probably want to cruise on a
given day is 25 or 30 miles, which is well within the range for electric pontoon boats.
Another reason why some people hesitate is that electric pontoons usually can’t go as
fast as some of the other options. This is perfectly true, but does it really matter? If you’re interested in
buying a pontoon in the first place, I’m guessing that you aren’t interested in boating as a means to get
around. There are much more efficient types of non-pontoon boats for that purpose. After all, the main reason
to have a pontoon is to enjoy the water and nature while relaxing, having fun, and maybe doing some fishing.
None of these things require you to go very fast. In any case, electric pontoon boats do go fast
enough.
But the main reason to purchase a small electric pontoon boat is that they’re perfect
for people who simply don’t need much room. If it’s just you and your spouse, for instance, why would you
want to splurge on a 15-seat luxury cruiser that you’ll never be able to fully use anyway? Small electric
pontoon boats can give you everything you need while also being cozy, lightweight, easy to transport, and
highly maneuverable.
They’re also perfect for small bodies of water. In some small lakes, a large boat can
look a little bit ridiculous. Electric pontoon boats don’t have that problem, and they’re also just fine for
lakes that allow only electric boats.
Finally, electric pontoon boats are simply better for nature and the planet. They
don’t add pollution to the air or the water. They’re also much quieter than the alternatives. If you’ve ever
been on a lake full of large boats, you know how noisy it can get. Electric pontoon boats don’t contribute to
that racket. And then there’s the fact that, if you’re very serious about environmental issues, there are
several companies now that make solar powered pontoon boats. If may be a couple more years before this
technology is perfected, but the ones coming out this year are definitely making progress.
